Lawn Care In Leeds - Fertilisers

Why should I feed my lawns?

To achieve a lush green lawn it is vitally important to have some kind of lawn care in place. Just like any living thing, grass needs food and water to survive and grow. A lawn that does not receive nutrition will have weak yellow grass and weeds will take hold as they can survive well in poor conditions. Without feeding, lawns just continue to deteriorate and the grass plants give way to weeds, moss and disease.

All is not lost. It is quite easy to turn a tired old lawn into a lush green one in a relatively short timeframe.

Our feeds contain three key nutrients which the grass requires:

  • Nitrogen - The key to healthy growth and good colour.
  • Potassium - This helps the lawn become more resilient.
  • Phosphorus - Helps to develop a healthy root structure.

Nutrients in the soil are being used by the grass pants and are washed out of the soil by rainfall over time (Nitrogen is extremely soluble). It is important to keep topping them up, at the right time, to keep the lawn in optimum condition.

Weeds are dealt with using selective herbicides. Selective means we are targeting weeds and not the grass plants. Once the weeds are gone and any moss has been removed the lawn is quickly transformed and it is simply a case of ongoing maintenance.

Feeding is key to a healthy lawn.

Get the most out of your lawn

Grass is a plant and needs to be cared for just like any other plant in order to flourish. It needs food, water, air and sunlight - just like any living thing.

Food - we can increase the amount of available food in the soil with granular fertilisers which release nitrogen and other nutrients slowly. Removing the weeds form the lawn also reduces the competition for space and resources meaning the grass plants can thrive.

Water - compacted lawns may need to be aerated to help water reach the root zone and we will offer advice in the dry months about how to get the most out of the least amount of watering. Watering your lawn doesn't cost as much as you might think.

Air - again compaction can be an issue so we may aerate your lawn to ensure oxygen can penetrate the soil and enter the root zone. Healthy roots make healthy grass.

Light - if parts of your lawn are in shade it may be worth sowing a shade tolerant seed in those areas. It is also important to clear leaves from the lawn and move things like trampolines around. Where the grass is deprived of light it will simply die.

With our lawn care service, good mowing practice and high quality products we can produce a lawn to be proud of and at a reasonable cost. Contact us today for a free lawn care quote and to start improving your lawn straight away!

Why Should I Aerate My LAwn?

Hollow tine aeration

It is said by many lawn care experts that aeration is the single best and most important thing you can do to your lawn. We couldn't agree more.

Spring and Autumn are the ideal time to aerate and here is a list of the benefits to your lawn in doing so:

  • Greater drought stress tolerance.
  • Improved uptake of water into the soil.
  • Greater fertiliser uptake and better use.
  • Better movement of air between soil and the atmosphere.
  • Less pooling/surface water.
  • Much stronger roots.
  • Reduced compaction.
  • Improved breakdown of thatch.

Domestic lawns benefit from hollow tine aeration each year especially on clay soils like we have around Leeds.

Tips For Lawn Care

Mowing a lawn cared for by Leeds Lawn Care

Good mowing

Cut your lawn regularly and don't cut too short. You should never cut more than a third of the leaf off so mowing every week is essential in the growing season. Some experts recommend cutting every five days. Find out more about the 'one third rule' here.

Make sure your mower blade is nice and sharp to prevent chewing and tearing which results in brown tips on the grass.

Do not mow in the hottest part of the day in summer and change the direction and route of your mowing to avoid 'wash boarding' where the mower wheels start to make grooves in the surface.

Watering

Remember grass is a plant and needs water to survive. Keep an eye on rainfall and during dry spells be proactive, don't wait for the lawn to go brown.

Water in the morning or evening to avoid evaporation and one good soak a week is better than lots of lighter watering.

Remove leaves and debris

It is really important to clear the lawn after the leaf fall later in the year. Leaves will deprive the lawn of light and if not removed will result in weak grass and bare patches.

Make repairs

Keep on top of any damage by reseeding small patches and fork areas of high foot traffic to help relieve compaction.

If you have any questions about damage to your lawn by pets, children or even disease just contact us for some friendly advice.

Feed the lawn

To enjoy the very best lawn you need to feed it. Nitrogen will promote healthy growth, a thicker sward and a lush green colour.

Fertilisers need to be applied correctly and evenly and professional know how and equipment is essential.

Soil Condition

Improve your soil condition

What is happening beneath your lawn is just as important as what it looks like on the surface. As well as improving soil condition by aerating we can also introduce Humic Acid into the soil. You may have never heard of it so what is it?

Humic Acid is produced when humus, the organic matter found in soil, is broken down by worms, beetles and microbial activity. Its gives the soil a dark colour and desirable crumbly texture. Clay lawns like we have around Leeds tend to be lacking in Humic Acid and it really does make a difference.

By improving the soil structure the grass roots can grow into it and absorb the nutrition that is available much more easily. A well nourished lawn is healthier, more resilient and hard wearing and will look better.

The benefits of using Humic Acid are almost endless:

  • Improved soil structure
  • Improved water retention
  • Soil darkening which retains warmth from sunlight
  • Improves the grass plants uptake of nutrients
  • Supports micro organisms vital for soil health
  • Neutralises soil PH
  • Makes Phosphorous more accessible in turn strengthening roots

The good news is that Humic Acid is part of our annual lawn care package alongside nitrogen fertilisers, seaweed and lawn tonics, selective weed controls and moss management.
