Lawn Care Services In Leeds

Caring for your lawn

Although there is a right time to work on your lawn and apply lawn treatments like granular feeds and weed controls we must also consider what the weather is doing, perhaps even using it to our advantage. If we are enjoying a mild spring we will get on with our scarifying but if it is frosty or there is a threat of snow we will delay them.

Spring – Once the weather settles down this is the time to invest some time and effort into the lawn in preparation for summer. Moss can develop where lawns contain a lot of thatch, grass can thin down in shady areas and the lawns in Leeds, on their heavy clay soil, can look a bit worse for wear. Even lawns that have had lawn care in the previous year can take a backwards step as everything slows down for winter. But do not worry. A good spring feed will kick start things and aeration and scarification if needed will remove unwanted matter and stimulate root growth. You will soon be mowing your lush green lawn again, but remember to start mowing higher and gradually drop down to your summer mowing height. Aim to only ever cut a quarter off of the grass plant at any time.

  • Aerate compacted lawns
  • Scarify thatch and moss from lawns
  • Feed with a quick release nitrogen feed
  • Start your mowing on a higher cut

Summer – After the hard work in spring we just want to maintain the lawn. The mowing height can drop a little (but never mow too short!) and in dry spells give the lawn some water. In areas of high traffic like a walkway to the greenhouse of where the kids play football it is worth relieving the compaction and allowing some air movement by simply forking the area now and then. If you have a trampoline move it to a different location each week if possible. Controlled feeds will slowly release nitrogen into the soil keeping the grass healthy and green.

  • Gradually drop down to your summer mowing height
  • Feed with controlled release fertilisers
  • Water when conditions are hot and dry

Autumn – It is important as we approach the end of the year that the lawn is still mowed correctly. Do not be tempted to have one last short mow to keep it looking good for winter. A 'scalped' lawn with stressed grass is the last thing you want going into the colder months. Keep the lawn clear of leaves and debris that will fall. Grass starved of light cannot survive.

  • Clear the lawn of leaves and debris
  • Reseed or repair and damage from summer

Winter – Like the rest of the garden and outdoor space the lawn will be forgotten by most. We will visit some of our customers who's lawns are more susceptible to moss when conditions are suitable to apply moss control and keep things in check for the coming spring. Aside from moss control the lawn should be left to rest.

  • Apply a winter moss control if necessary
  • Keep the lawn clear of late leaf fall
  • Rest the lawn
